This property in Port Townsend presented a unique challenge and opportunity for Northwest Outdoor Lighting, since it covered three acres (one of the largest properties we’ve lit yet), with numerous types of trees and plantings. Our client had seven key areas she wanted illuminated, and our job was to hit them all!
The Madrona trees were one of the key points to illuminate. One was deep in the woods, which you could see from the kitchen sink, and one was in the middle of the grass. We love selecting certain trees and focal points that draw your eye to the artistry while leaving the perimeter less highlighted. Using two types of fixtures, we illuminated these trees so that they stand out from the rest of the landscaping. The colors of the bark and the lovely foliage are just remarkable when highlighted. Having quality fixtures that can reach 150’ up to the top of trees truly makes a statement piece!
Another was the beautiful antique mermaid statue. Most people would highlight her from the ground up. Not only was this impossible since it sat on a cement patio, but you would miss the mermaid’s face. Craig fashioned a specific holder and light fixture contraption and illuminated the face AND the oyster pearl. As a result, our client describes Craig as master of the intersection of technical know-how and artistic design. The homeowner was so enthusiastic about our approach that Phase Two is already in the works.
